Stone Grandfathers

Jeju Island is an island off the south coast of Korea, similar in location to the Isle Of Wight in the U.K. It humorously exports three commodities; women, wind and rock. It actually exports oranges.

The island is volcanic, resulting in a lot of basalt rock. From this rock are made small statues which litter the island and populate local culture; 돌하르방 ((하르방 is the Jeju dialect word for 할아버지)) or “Stone Grandfathers”. Popular legend has it that if a woman rubs the nose of the statue she will have a son. Although this may have more to do with Jeju’s status as Korea’s honeymoon capital than anything else.
